OUR HISTORY

The Lakewood Educational Foundation was officially established in April of 2003 after more than a year of study, discussion and groundwork. Initial inquiries into the work and benefits of having a local educational foundation were conducted by a marketing committee for the Lakewood school board. Once interested citizens of the school district formed the first Board of Directors, the Lakewood Educational Foundation (LEF) was established as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The LEF board decided soon thereafter to create an endowment fund to be held and managed by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation (GRCF). The organization also maintains an activity fund account with a local bank to supplement grant funding and to cover minimal operating expenses. Since 2003 over $323,000 has been awarded in classroom grants. See the Grant page for a listing of recent grants.
